Is compounded prescription necessary for pets?

A veterinarian's point of view
Small to medium size pets will need smaller doses, therefore, you may have to cut pills because many manufactured medications do not come in small enough doses. Doing this leaves the pill with an open end with no coating, making the pill bitter to the pet’s tongue. Furthermore, by cutting the pill you can not be sure that you are getting the proper dose. Correct dosing and flavoring would be two reasons why you would need a prescription compounded verses a manufactured product. Wouldn't you like a transdermal option or a flavored liquid for some drugs that are required for your pets chronic conditions?  Owner compliance is the number one reason why pets do not receive the treatment necessary to obtain optimal pet health.  By increasing owner compliance, it will allow for better treatment outcomes for all pets.

An owner’s scenario
The vet prescribes pills for your cat, Dash, and the directions were to give it to him twice a day for 5 days. You try to just put it in his mouth and feed it to him. However, when you try this, Dash spits it out! You try again and this time hold his mouth shut, yet this still does not work… he spits it out again! Or you try feeding Dash his medicine and he bites you and by now, the coating of the tablet is no longer intact and is dissolving in your hands. Dash has already ran away by now, so what could you have done?  Wouldn’t you love a tasty tuna flavored medication that he would eat without a fight? Our compounding specialists can help make this for your pet.

Reasons you may want to compound for your pet
Dosage strength and route of administrationIf the correct strength is unavailable, we can make the exact strength for your pet. As for a different route of administration, you may prefer a transdermal cream that you can rub on the inside of the ear instead of a dreaded pill that your pet might not even take with ease.

Flavoring
Flavoring can be very affective in getting your pet to take his or her medicine, especially with cats. We can take a drug with a very bitter taste like (Metronidazole) and compound it into a tuna flavored suspension which cats love. We can also compound drugs to have a sweet taste.Dosage forms not commercially availableIf a medication is no longer available in the United States, it can probably be compounded. If your pet is intolerant of oral medications, an alternate route of administration can be prepared.
